These bottle stoppers are hand crafted from various woods including Bocote (1), Cocobolo (2), Zebrawood (3), Granadillo (4), Brazilian ebony (5), and Olivewood (6).

In Principio is a business that began out of a desire to create quality wood products by hand, for the glory of God. In principio Is Latin for “in the beginning”, referencing the creation story in the Bible. The God of the Christian Bible, is a God of creativity and design. At the beginning of all time, God brought into fruition His eternal plan to create the heavens, earth, and man. His plan is a plan of redemption, which begins with the fall of mankind in the garden of Eden, and the redemption of man through the Life, Death, and Resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. In my work, I hope to transform humble pieces of wood into timelessly crafted pieces pointing to the beauty, creativity, and glory of our God.

Each stopper is finished with a waterproof coating to increase its durability and longevity in the kitchen or bar. These stoppers can be used in a variety of bottles including wine and whiskey. I produce each stopper by turning the wood on a lathe at about 2500 RPM’s while guiding my tool to remove layers of wood at a time. As seen in the video above, this produces a perfectly circular piece and creates a nice even finish. Once I have my desired shape, I sand the piece and apply roughly 7 coats of finish to create a beautifully shiny yet resistant look.

Floating Shelves: A Live Edge shelf has one side, or edge, which maintains the natural contour of the tree it came from. This offers a beautiful combination of a rustic, yet minimalistic view, all while preserving nature’s beauty. Because these shelves are real wood, each shelf contains unique characteristics such as cracks, holes, grain differences, etc., and I finish each “imperfection” to make it functional while maintaining the original beauty. Each shelf will have its own character and style due to these differences! Each shelf is finished using a 100% natural tung oil that enlivens the grain and brings a realistic, matte finish to it. Tung oil is known for its ability to not yellow over time and for its water resistance. Bottle Openers: I hand make each opener by drilling and threading the hole in the wood to hold the bottle opener piece. Once this is complete, I place it into my lathe and spin the piece at about 2500 RPM’s. This speed allows me to hold my tool to the piece and remove the wood in small layers at a time. After I have reached my desired shape, I sand and apply about 7 coats of finish to the bottle opener to produce a shiny and durable finish.
